Does your exhaust fan suck? Find out.

People assume that all DC motor fans offer similar performance when installed, but as seen in the “blind study” summarized by Steven Winter Associates, Inc. in this whitepaper, this statement couldn’t be further from the truth. See how a number of exhaust fans compare when up against real world installation scenarios, and learn more about the impact of poor ductwork on a fan’s ability to move air.

MasterSPEC Fans

Whole-House Ventilation Fans
MasterSPEC high-performance, precision whole-house ventilation fans

MasterSPEC is powered by a virtually silent EC motor with Constant CFM adaptive, variable speed technology with three built-in high-speed airflow settings of 50, 80, and 110 cfm, a built-in Precision Airflow Selector, which allows you to dial in the precise airflow required to match your design or code requirements and a built-in 0-to-60-minute time delay. 2-speed operation can meet ASHRAE 62.2, LEED, CalGreen, EPA Indoor airPLUS, California Title 24, Washington State Residential Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality Code and ENERGY STAR for Homes. This fan features plug and play customization with three optional USB plug-in modules (humidity, motion and CO2).

MultiSPEC Fans

Spot Ventilation Fans
Low-profile exhaust fans for wall or ceiling mount and solutions ideal for garage ventilation

Greenheck offers a variety of different spot ventilation solutions to best meet the builder’s design needs.

With airflow up to 110 cfm, the MultiSPEC SP-LP series is the most powerful low-profile exhaust fan on the market. The SP-LP’s low-profile 3 ½-inch housing depth allows for wall or ceiling installations in bathrooms and easily fits in a 2x4 stud bay. Featuring three built-in high-speed airflow settings of 50, 80 and 110 cfm, the virtually silent EC motor with Constant CFM adaptive, variable speed technology reacts to increased static pressure by increasing its speed to ensure the required airflow to remove unhealthy air and moisture.

TruSPEC models SP-B150 and SP-B200 are ideal for garage ventilation applications, exhausting potentially harmful fumes and toxins and helping to control extreme temperatures.

ASSURE 120 Fan

ASSURE ERVs
Compact, affordable, balanced ventilation solution

The ASSURE120 Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) is the perfect compact balanced ventilation solution for single or multi-family installations with limited mechanical space. The low-profile design (9.75” height) simplifies installations in bulkheads and drop ceilings. The unit offers a 50-130 CFM operational range with 3 high-speed selections.

SYNC Product Grouping

SYNC ERVs
Advanced, energy-efficient, balanced ventilation solution

The SYNC line of ERVs feature advanced EC motors with adaptive, variable speed technology.

The SYNC110 has a low-profile design (9.75” height) that simplifies installations in bulkheads and drop ceilings.

SYNC180 and SYNC270 are cold-weather certified and provide exclusive precision balancing capability when paired with the new PrecisionSYNC controller. Both models also feature best-in-class core efficiency (SRE) ratings.

Does your exhaust fan suck? How do you really know?

Exhaust ventilation exists to eliminate moisture and other containments that can affect health, comfort, and the durability of the fan. Proper installation is key and involves three trades: an electrician, HVAC contractor, and a builder/sider/roofer — and a lot could go wrong along the way.

Does Your Exhaust Fan Suck?, a whitepaper by Steven Winter Associates, Inc., discusses a "blind study" on the performance of exhaust fans. The author reveals the variation that occurs in exhaust fans with a similar rating and well as exposes data on the potential installed pressure drop of exhaust fan ductwork. An exhaust fan installation best practices guide is included.

Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) is an authority on improving commercial, residential and multi-family environments.
